Movin’ On Up

I’m without the internet for a few days due to the move. It should be going by tomorrow, I guess. Our new house is fanfuckingtastic and it’s only gonna get better.

I made my first gravy yesterday.

A Little Secret

No descriptions of things today. You’ll just have to trust all my links. Now fall backwards and I’ll catch you.

Trading Parties for DS3

Supertouch

Psst, pass it on

Sitting on the old, chipped porch swing at my house yesterday I realized that as of tomorrow I will never see our garden through the open screen door, crickets buzzing in the yard, families walking by on the street, neighbors on their porches. That’s not going to be my view anymore. For four years I’ve watched my street grow and change with the families that live on it, and now I’ll be moving to another part of the neighborhood, not far away, but still different. I’m used to my street and its rhythms and it’ll be hard to find the beat of the new one. That’s not to say that I’m not excited, but I have a right to get nostalgic when I close a chapter of my life. My house has forever been kind of a dump, but it was my dump, and no matter who lived there year by year I was always there. Now I’m moving to a place that is neutral ground for all of us who’ll be living there. I’m nervous and excited and ready for everything to start happening, because, dammit, I’m an adventurer. I will miss the view, though.

Beasts and Birds

Mike Brodie has a show going on in Milwaukee at Paper Boat Boutique showcasing his polaroids. But since most of you, myself included, will not be in the Milwaukee area, or even the same time-zone, I’ve got a couple of links to his couple of sites.

He cultivates Plrds.com on which you can get your own work posted if it’s good enough. And he keeps his own thoughts and dreams over at Ridin’ Dirty Face. Check them both out for multiple eyegasms.

Jason Sho Green, of sidebar fame, has about a thousand shows coming up with some of his work in them. He posted a picture of his limited edition sticker for Popcling on his art journal today.

Theo Jansen makes me say holy fuck out loud. I actually surprised the cleaning lady.

I’m spending all my time packing and cleaning and getting ready to move on Friday. I even disassembled my computer yesterday, a suprising move for someone as addicted to internet connectivity as I am. I have this recurring fear that when I try to move my 37 gallon terrarium the bottom is going to fall out and everything in it will die in a shower of glass, dirt, and water. I cant wait!

Da Rootz

Since Richard Delicious reminded me where I came from (see comments in previous post) I’m gonna post a link to some of the best graffiti that Canada has to offer. In our sidebar we’ve linked Bombing Science which showcases graf artists from all over North America as well as the best urban fashion available from all over the world. Today they posted photos of The Styles in Progress events that took place in Toronto this past weekend (see flyers), and I have to say the results are mind-blowing. There’s not as much innovation as I usually like, but there is more than enough to satisfy the eye. It gets my fingers all itchy to start writing again.

Jumpstart

A quick smattering of links before the workday really starts. Keep trying on that scavenger hunt. The secret prize is worth it.

There seems to be a new trend in the illustration/communication design/art world, or rather a return to an old trend: psychedelia. The color schemes have slowly started shifting over to bright pinks, oranges, purples and greens with the colors bleeding into each other and generally shaking the retina in its foundations. As many psychedelic drugs as I’ve taken in the course of my life (think: a lot, and then triple that amount, and then cube that amount), you’d think that my eyes wouldn’t even see separate colors anymore, but they do, and they love them. Minimalism is fine in certain things, and it definitely gave designers more time to focus on interesting font structures, but in the art world I’m glad that artists are trying to arrest the eye again, to capture the viewer. I could talk about it all day (because I specialize in bullshit) but I think you should just check out some fine examples of what I’m talking about.

I saw a poster in a book a few days ago with a weird looking hamster being poked in the stomach and making a face somewhere between wretching and ecstasy. For whatever fated reason I found the website of that poster’s creator this morning. Zeloot makes that magic.

Another artist who, in the first five seconds of seeing his page, just dropped into my top five with a fucking bullet is Thomas Han. His colors make me get DT’s-esque shakes in a very good way. I keep getting sidetracked on this post by his site, in fact.

Though the colors aren’t exactly psychedelic in Kevin Dart’s illustrations, they are vivid and eye-catching. Couple that with his cool, neo-lounge style and Corman-inspired subject matter and you’ve got a colorful snail of awesome eating its way through your cabbages.

And lastly, the folks over at Stickerobot are having a little design contest with a prize package that made me feel very awkward in the pants region. Middle-school-history-class-put-a-book-in-front-of-it-awkward.

Scavenger Hunt

Oh, no!! What are you going to do if I don’t post something new today? My loyal 18 readers I’m sure are chomping at the bit for some craptastic new bit of flotsam that I’ve picked up from the internet. Well not today, my little grape-smugglers. Today we’re going to do something different. I’m going to list the things that I found today and then you are going to have to find them. Post your links in the comments section. Whoever gets the most right answers wins a secret prize. Fuck yes I bring innovation to the internets! You know how we do.

Find these:
1)The Environmental Paradox of Bicycling
2)A kid in a banana costume on fire
3)Scooch in front of a Hecox wall
4)Guy 1: Yeah, I’m kind of intimidated by dildos because they may render men useless.

Guy 2: But a dildo can’t poop on your chest.
5)Artist who paints a lot of letters and lightning bolts
6)Video for RJD2’s “1976″ (original site)

And that’s all. I’m not expecting anyone to find them all. You’ve been given your mission. Now go.

Try, Try Again

So far there are multiple complications with the podcast, but nothing I can’t work out. I think. And since I can’t go camping this weekend (it’s raining and I would have to go by myself anyway) I’ll spend my free time working on it. I was going to start compiling the playlist this morning, but instead I stumbled upon Hapland and it’s successors which drove me completely insane. They’re like the game I linked yesterday only more frustrating because you have to perform some of the steps at the exact right time otherwise it won’t work, and then they throw in some misdirectional actions. Fuk you, game designers, I beat Myst when I was 10 and I’ll beat this now. Wait, did I ever beat Myst? Crap, I can’t remember now.

If you like to be amazed by people’s ingenuity in design then you should definitely check out VVORK.

For any artist, if you’ve been featured in Arkitip then you’re already pretty high on my list. Jason Thielke proves me right.

And quick, while you still can, click your browser over to gnotorious.com to hear a taste of genius. The DJ duo Sound Advice have taken a page from Dangermouse’s book and mashed-up the new Gnarls Barkley Album with The Notorious B.I.G. It’s the ultimate homage to the Grey Album.

I am expecting the podcast to be up by the end of the weekend but with such a good show going on Saturday night I might not finish. If you’re in the Athens area then you should check this show out. The line-up is phenomenal, it’s free and it’s BYOB (which mean whiskey). I am fucking there, man.

Daytrippin’

I’m working on hashing together our first podcast. In the spirit of everything going on here it’s going to be themed “Music to make you move.” Because we’re moving into the new house next Friday. Get it? You get it. I’m ready to get on with the moving so most of the music in the podcast will be the kind that makes you shake your ass, or at least get out of your chair and walk around the room. I’m shooting for a half-hour show, but if things run long I may try to stretch it to an hour. And of course it wouldn’t be a decent podcast without some words of wisdom and one sided conversation from yours truly interspersed throughout. My microphone is crap though so we’ll see how that works out. I may even sing along with some of the songs, because I am just that kind of awesome, Earthlings. I’ll ask the others if they want in on the action, but since they never post here they probably won’t. Fine. More for me, dickholes.

Let’s do some links.

Todays epipenultimate link (I’ve just foreshadowed hard) is a stew of links relating to my new favorite album, which will definitely get some podcast play, Shine Through by Aloe Blacc. If you have ever liked Stevie Wonder, and I’m pretty sure you have since most of you are not goth obsessed, hot-topic groupies, then you will be into this album. It’s like Stevie Wonder meets the twenty first century in an alley and the century is hanging out with D’Angelo, just shootin’ the shit. In other words: it’s really good. Jamie Liddel wishes he could make an album like this. The album was released by Stones Throw, which is the home label of such wonders as Madlib and Peanut Butter Wolf. Spend some time checking out their other artists, and then cruise over to their Aloe Blacc Profile and get some learnin’. When you’re done there you can check out all of these other links to get a full dose of Aloe.
Aloeblacc.com
Aloe Blacc Myspace is good for getting some previews of songs on the album.
Emanon site. This is Aloe’s hip-hop group with Dj Exile. Their last album is in my top ten of all time. Expect to hear it in the cast, also.

Now that you’ve been inundated with all that soul and hip-hop for your mind I’m going to take things to a little more esoteric level. I was link hopping around this morning and came across a new version of Design Graphik. If you’ve never seen their site before then this will be quite a treat for you. If you’re familiar with their work then this will be quite a treat for you. I found myself smiling the entire time I was there, and it was one of those wide-eyed, awe-and-wonder type smiles that babies get when you jingle keys in front of them.

And out final link is a flash game that I got really obsessed with for a while last year. Grow Cube is an intuitive flash 3-D continuance puzzle, which basically means that you have to use 3-D objects in a specific order for each of them to evolve enough to create the final goal. The idea itself is pretty fucking badical (badass+radical), but the game itself is really well designed and, most importantly, fun. Once you’ve mastered Grow Cube, and don’t expect to get it in the first hour of playing (yes, you will want to play this game for an hour), then you should try all the other games the designer has made. This shit’s better than an easy-bake oven anyday.

Diversions

Just a couple of quick links before I sit here and think about how much I would like to be pooping.

I’m really excited because I just spent money that I don’t have on what may be the coolest book that I have ever purchased. If you’re interested in design, if you’re interested in tattoos, if you’re interested in anything beautiful and amazing then this is the book for you. It’s the 3rd ever Victionary. This edition (a limited edition so order now) focuses on tattoo icons and features tattoo designs from some of the best designers, artists and other such personages in the world today. Get yours now!

The other link for this morning is via Metafilter. I’m not going to tell you anything about it except that it’s a blog all about revenge. I give to you That Girl Emily. Taste the delicious venom.

If you’re lucky I might let you have some dessert later. Start commenting more and I’ll think about it.
