If you get a specific image in your mind when I say Edwardian then you’re halfway to understanding the feeling of Jay Long’s work. Sepia tones, subtle shadow, and a Punch&Judy atmosphere flood the artwork of this Austin, Texas resident. And Edwardian is very much what I think when I look at his shadowboxes, enough that I expect a bowler hat and handlebar moustache to ride by on a velocipede. Of course I’ve never been very sure if my ideas about the term Edwardian were anywhere near correct. Could be I’m an idiot.
Idiocy or not I still enjoy the hell out of these paintings even if Long’s bio smacks of nerdy pretension. You can be a pretentious nerd and still be a nice guy. And you can be an asshole and still be a superior artist. The art is great, start to finish, and that’s all that needs to be said.
You can visit his online portfolio here. And if you live in Austin you can seek him out at home. And if you’re Jay Long himself and you Googled your name and found this: sorry about the pretentious comment. I just calls ‘em like I sees ‘em.
