I Am 8-Bit

Gallery 1988 is having their annual I Am 8-Bit show where artists reinterpret their favorite old video games in a, well, artistic fashion. This year’s work is surprisingly not as great as that of its two predecessors, but it still remains pretty high on the awesome meter by which I gauge all things. Myself being the maximum in awesomness. So you can see the bar is monumentally high. Something around here is monumentally high, I can tell you that much.

I think the picture of the artist pretty much speaks for itself but here are a few terms that might come up in his work, just to entice you to check it out:

This cool video was made by this cool guy. Surprisingly the rest of the songs by the band from the video suck balls. The rest of the songs from the cool guy’s band are slap-your-grandma-good.

The Filth

Fette is a french visual artist who creates beautiful and surreal hand rendered images. She has presently set her studio, The Filth, in Los Angeles. Her unique style conjures kinky references and organic aesthetics while carrying ironic statements. Since her first appearances in the infamous Beast Magazine, she has been collaborating on countless projects and has been featured in numerous international publications. When Fette is not sketching, she edits a website about the exploding Los Angeles art scene where she reviews shows and interviews artists she meets in their studio.

Openings

There are several new shows that have opened up in the past week, and several more that I won’t mention here because I don’t like them. The ones I do like and will recommend are:

Fourplay at Lineage Gallery

Blaine Fontana at Limited Addiction Gallery

Child’s Play at White Walls Gallery

Andrew Brandou at Corey Hellford Gallery. Now you can see what I was talking about.

Art Syndicate.

So much art in one country and me nowhere near any of it. Soon to change, chaps. Soon to change.

Scraphouse

Possibly one of the coolest things I have ever seen: The Scraphouse. And the motherfucker only cost $2200 to build. I’d live there in a heartbeat.

The Polaroid Kidd

IF you spend enough time with the punk tribes in this country you’ll end up with some crazy stories to tell. When you’ve got nothing to lose and no reason to stop your life starts to accumulate adventure pretty quickly. Whether you think thats a good or a bad thing should tell you a lot about yourself. Most people aren’t out for stories. In the case of The Polaroid Kidd, stories seem to be all there is. Stories in the form of some amazing photos.

Frank Herholdt

Somehow Frank Herholdt manages to accomplish what I think most art photographers should aspire to, and that is: to make their subject seem new. I don’t mean just to make it look good and fresh, but to take the subject and somehow capture it outside of its environment while still in its environment. That’s really the best way that I can explain it without using the word magic.

Arthur de Pins

I came across the work of Arthur de Pins while browsing through the Nicktoons Network Animation Festival website. He had entered a short film called La Revolution des Crabes, which garnered acclaim. The rest of his work is equally as oddball and well done. Mark up another one for France.
