Joshua Davis

If the name Joshua Davis doesn’t mean anything to you then you aren’t paying close enough attention. Innovative, influential, uber-talented, and widely renowned designer are only a beginning to what he has accomplished in his tenure in the design world. He’s responsible for developing entirely new systems for using technology to create original designs. And I don’t mean he’s just well versed in photoshop. I mean that he’s created systems that follow a set of variables to create completely original works themselves without his help. I can’t say enough about how important he is. I think he and I should play catch in the front yard sometime.

Eric Kass

It’s not everyday that I run into a designer whose work appeals to me in its entirety. For the most part everyone has their little slips and missteps and projects that I think could suck less. Not Eric Kass. This guy…this fuckin’ guy right here can design circles around pretty much everyone else in the world. I like his style, I like his innovation, I like the way he promotes himself, and I like that he’s branched out into almost every aspect of graphic design possible. You can tell that he loves it. And not just because he says so in his bio.

Beci Orpin

What is it with the Australian’s this week. It seems like everywhere I turn there’s another great art/design portfolio and standing proudly behind it is another Aussie with too much damn talent. Beci Orpin is another in the long line of killer Australian artists. She makes primary colors her bitch and then some, all while maintaining a cutesy twee ideal that I enjoy getting toothaches from. Congratulations, Australians, you make the rest of us look bad. I’ll just have to take heart in the fact that only 10% of your continent is livable.

Business Cards: A Flickr Set

By an odd coincidence today I came across a Flickr set called business cards just as I was about to start working on some of my own business cards. Didn’t even search for it, just happened by. I love that kind of synchronicity. I wasn’t so lucky, however, to spend 3 hours looking at all of the photos in the set. I’ve never seen so many simple yet beautiful design ideas all in one place. If I could afford to have those kinds of cards made up for myself I’d probably never want to part with any of them. As it stands I can’t afford very much so the ones I’ll get will be crappy enough to actually give to clients. Or bums on the street. Gotta start those barrel fires with something.

HBO: Voyeur

The HBO Voyeur project is at the same time baffling and addictive. I’ve still yet to figure out if there is a purpose behind the whole thing or if HBO has finally joined ranks of the “weird sites just for the sake of art.” Regardless of their motives, HBO has outdone themselves with this one; not only providing excellent visual content but also interesting back story to add three-dimensionality to each vignette. Watching people’s lives unfold in quick (or sometimes not so quick) clips and a great interface make this site worth checking out. You probably never knew how strange the world was just behind the brick walls.

Bemodern

Australian illustrator/designer Bemodern has a body of work featuring only the coolest clients and only the coolest work. I’d have to say that so far this cat is the James Dean of the print design world. A wide variety of styles with an overall aesthetic of modern, gleaming cool. Dig it.
