Ryan Heshka - Radio Science Funnies, Inc.

Remember a couple of days ago when I reminded you that Ryan Heshka is the bee’s knees? Well there is a preview on Flickr of his new show at Secret Headquarters in LA. You’re probably gonna want to check this out so that your eyes don’t hate you for looking at all that gay porn. There’s only so much dong they’ll tolerate before they rebel.

1) Nada Surf - Whose Authority. I’m not a big Nada Surf fan but this song is still in my head. The video also stars Michael C. Maronna from Pete and Pete.

2) Patapon. So is everything in Japan just a giant gumdrop acidtrip? It makes me feel like a giant, neon, Porky Pig is raining down day-glo semen on Tokyo.

3) Onitsuka Tiger. Thanks, Matt.

Garrett Morin

Really great portfolio from Garrett Morin who’s a part of Rad Mountain in Brooklyn. The kind of work I want to tack up on my inspiration board (what you don’t have one?).

Rhapsody of Steel

While trolling through the choppy waters of Boing Boing this morning I came across a link to a blog post about the John Sutherland animated film Rhapsody of Steel. The image caught my eye because I remembered seeing it before. Where? I can’t remember. It’s likely that I watched the film while I worked in the Peabody Awards Archive, since odd ephemera like that was laying around everywhere. Whatever the origins for me personally, it was still amazing to read the blog post and be reminded of how amazing this film was. It was Rhapsody of Steel that first got me interested in the work of Maurice Noble and Eyvind Earle, two amazing animators, that pretty much started my fascination with the beauty of cartoons. You can still find quality artistry like theirs today, though it’s rare (see the work of Craig McCracken, Gendy Tartakovsky, and Stephen Hillenburg). There are more Sutherland films available on Archives.org, which is, if you haven’t been using it, an amazing resource, plus Rick Praelinger is a nice guy.

Just some videos for you today while work catches up with me.

In other news: did anyone see where my masthead went? Lame.

1) WK Interact and Shepard Fairey. Via Wooster Collective.

2) David Ellis: The Owl. I love that dude’s sculptures.

3) Marijuana Vending Machines. Yeah, you read that right.

4) Thermo Sneak Peek Part I, Part II, and Part III. This will probably mean nothing to about 95% of you, but it’s a great peek at Adobe’s Thermo, which let’s designers create rich internet apps visually rather than having to learn a programming language.

Antoine+Manuel

The site design is a little annoying, because it’s a little overly designer-ish, but the work of Antoine+Manuel is more than good enough for me to ignore the website design. They seem to be involved in everything from walls and rooms to illustration and print design. I’ve got to respect anyone who can make the transition from print to the real world so easily. Check out their gallery, and make sure to click around a lot because there’s more work hidden in each section.

Andrew Rae

Having only just discovered the work of Andrew Rae I can’t reasonably call myself a fan, however, I can see fandom in the future between myself and his oddball illustrations. Sketchy and weird and hilarious, all his drawings make me want to melt action figures together and listen to Rush. What does that mean? I’m not sure, I just call ‘em like I see ‘em.

Ryan Kapp

I’ve never visited Chi-town, but I’ve heard good things. My hang up is that vacationing anywhere that’s colder than where I am currently doesn’t seem like much of a vacation. I might visit Chicago eventually, and one of the things that adds a little more weight to that decision is the artwork of Ryan Kapp. Kapp creates strange and subtle suburb-scapes with rough oils that seem warm and lonely at the same time like a song that you remember from when you were a kid. His paintings also seem to imbue that isolated feeling of living in one of millions of homes on quiet, tree-lined streets; the easiest place to be surrounded by people and still be alone. They remind me of when I used to walk across people’s front yards at night and make up stories about the families that lived inside the blank, similar houses. I didn’t look in the windows, because I knew that my stories were more interesting than the simple lives behind the curtains.

Guy Archard

I can’t put my finger on why I like British photographer Guy Archard’s work so much. There’s something about it that feels like it’s staring back at me, watching me, and not just the other way around. That’s not something I’m accustomed to with most photographs, and eerie though it is, it also keeps me interested. His photos want you to look, and then they look right back at you while you’re looking at them. Or maybe I am just completely insane. Either way it makes for a new experience.

1) Tagged In Motion. Holy fuck, a way to translate real time graffiti creation into a 3-D virtually interactive environment. Just watch, and it’ll make sense. Fucking awesome. Then go read more about the project here. Via Wooster Collective

2) Wendy McColm: Slap. HAH! I just can’t stop watching. Via Supertouch

3) The Last Calligraphers. I can’t even imagine how long it must take to write an entire newspaper by hand.

4) Giant Mechanized Elephant. I don’t think I need to say anything more to promote that.

5) Superfriends meets Friends. Now that’s comedy.

6) Erykah Badu - Honey. From her new album. Finally.
