Ok, so when I looked at the work of Mark Chariker, I liked it a lot. It’s got great color, a good pop art kind of tone, a little comic book feeling, and an action-y punch. Then I read his brief discussion of what fuels his work, and what meanings he’s trying to convey to his viewers, and wanted to walk away. It’s not that I don’t believe in various greater meanings behind artwork, it’s that I don’t like hearing people talk about it. I don’t. I honestly could mostly care less what the artist was trying to convey. Art is for whoever’s looking at it; each viewer is going to take away from it whatever they want, and that’s one of the best things about it. I studied aesthetic philosophy for a little while and the only thing that I ever really learned from it was that I like things because I like them, instinctually and immediately. Knowing more about the artist gives more depth to my appreciation, but doesn’t make it any stronger or clearer, so I couldn’t give a shit really. All that being said, Chariker’s art is great and you should stare at it for hours, but forget the reading, and just open your eyes.
