Adam Haynes

It’s part of the process of anyone looking at art to compare the artist to other artists they’ve seen. Hell, that’s part of pretty much everything we do if you subscribe to the standard “schema” model of cognitive science. So, of course, one of the first things that I thought when I saw the work of Adam Haynes was that there are a lost of similarities in style and subject to some of Evan Hecox’s work. In general, my next step is to completely ignore that, because I don’t really care. I try to remind myself as much as possible to let the art stand alone, like I’ve never seen anything like it before. This helps me to get closer to my instincts, my gut reaction to the work. My gut reaction to Adam Haynes? Good. Really good. His linework is precise and dirty at the same time, which impresses the hell out of me. His composition for his Nike ads is fucking incredible. It’s almost unheard of to have a first person viewpoint in an illustration, and, with the added “wide angle lens” style, the images come out complex, interesting, and dramatic. In short, Haynes needs to hurry up and get some available artwork up on his site, or send me a postcard sketch in the mail. Someway I need to get a piece of his work up on my walls.
