J. Alex Stamos

J Alex Stamos
Can you blame Kansas City illustrator J. Alex Stamos for not using his first name? Being named John Stamos is almost as bad as being named Harry Cox, though not exactly in the same way. Stamos makes up for his stigma by being a damn fine illustrator. His work hearkens a little to James Jean’s style, but in the way that they share similar techniques. Stamos definitely has his own style down. His work is smooth and sketchy all at the same time, with some heavy, contrasting colors. I was all set to call him golden just based on his illustrations, and then I saw that his sketchbook section has work that might be even better. It’s more complex, more freestyle (the nature of any sketchbook). I’d like to see some fully realized personal work in this vein. I’d like to see more of his work in general. C’mon, Alex, the people are clamoring for some freshness. Bring it.
