Kim Cogan

The Girl knew Kim Cogan from the old days at Pop’s Bar. We have an old spiral-bound book of his on our shelves, and a flyer that he made with a two-headed geek on it. I think he made that anyway. But Kim Cogan is actually one of the best cityscape painters at work today. He doesn’t dress his subjects up, or gloss over the tattered parts; he just generally strips them of people and paints the quiet, humming city. The light he captures with his oils is that distinct quality you only find in cities, a combination of natural light, flourescent, and halogen that we throw up to the sky to keep the night at bay. I don’t want to get overly effusive here, because you should just go look at them for yourself. These are the best cities since Hopper’s Nighthawks. If you’re in NYC you can still see his show up at Gallery Henoch. It comes down this Saturday so hurry your ass up.
