Cynthia Ona Innis

Bay Area abstract painter Cynthia Ona Innis is, like many abstract-ers, concerned with change. More specifically she is concerned with biological change from the minute changes of life to the great changes of birth and decay. The round, organic shapes that swim, fall, trail, and explode in her works play through the various dramas of dynamic life, plant and animal both. Whether she intended or not, the oval, pill-shaped markings that are sprayed throughout each piece remind me of gel electrophoresis of DNA, which just solidifies her organic leanings. Most of her color palettes are soft and sparse, giving each color more room for meaning in contrast to the few others that share the neutral background. Looking through Innis’ work was a very visceral experience, and I don’t think I can ask for more than that from any artworks, abstract or not.

Inspiring combination of detail, color, and harmonized abstraction.
