Christopher Koelle

When you say that you’re in love with printmaking, you’d better back that shit up with proof. And proof is in abundance on Christopher Koelle’s portfolio site. That’s not to say that there’s nothing there but printmaking projects. Far from it. But it’s the printmaking section where you can see the real love for creation shining through. Dude puts a lot of heart into that work. I really appreciate the variance of the line quality depending on the subject. It’s the little things like that that show me someone is paying attention. Not to mention that it takes a high level of talent in any medium to vary styles from piece to piece to create mood. Koelle’s got it in spades.

I generally don’t get much out of the R. Crumb-ish gross out style that folks like Meathaus swear by. I enjoy it, but it doesn’t get my inspirational juices flowing, so I usually leave it alone. Well, I’m sorry to bite this from Beautiful/Decay, but the work of Jon Vermilyea definitely made me inspirationally lubed up. His screenprinted short mag “He-man and the 13 Trials of Eternia” pretty much blew me away, and I’ve never wanted to get my hands on some fresh screens more. But that’s only the beginning of an amazing portfolio of comics and images. Welcome to the top ten with a bullet, Jon. You’ve taken over my brain for the day.

Douglas Alvarez

Nature, badass bitches, and anthropomorphic animals. Douglas Alvarez paints a lot of things that you don’t see much of in his home city of LA. I take that back, they’ve got some pretty badass bitches there. Where does the rest of that imagery come from though? According to Alvarez’s bio, practically everywhere. Let’s hope that everywhere sticks around for a little while longer so he can keep bringing the newness. We’ve got until 2012, right? I mean, I’m not an Aztec calendar expert or anything, but I was a very high ranking priest to Quetzlcoatl back in the day so…

UK Illustrator Mick Marston is killing it. It may never be revived he’s killing it so hard. I need 30cc’s of epinephrine over here to try and save it because Mick Marston has killed it almost completely. Ok. Joke’s gone too far.

Irena Zablotska

Irena Zablotska
Ukrainian artist Irena Zablotska did something this morning that no one has done in a very long time (meaning a month or so). She inspired me to get back out on the street and paint a wall. Or actually I might start with a wall in my apartment, but either way she is the inspiration for my renewed interest in something big. She’s got that subtle something that’s very Eastern European about her work, and the other 95% of it is just plain, old badass. I especially enjoy the more geometric works. They remind me a little of Tim Biskup’s more recent works. I just can’t help it lately; I love all things geometric. When I close my eyes all I can see are lines and shapes intersecting and overlapping. Thanks to Zablotska, I’m going to be seeing those shapes on every blank wall I pass today.
