Jordan Gray

Jordan Gray
Jordan Gray seems like one of those guys that wakes up in the middle of the night with a fantastic idea, and then doesn’t go back to sleep for the next few days while working on it. That’s how I think of Spike Jonze, too. There are a lot of people with great ideas for projects, but only so many who absolutely have to see them made. Jordan definitely has the great ideas, just take a stroll through his portfolio and that will be clear. But he clearly has the follow-through. How else could he have made a feature film? Or a badass comic? Or such great type choices? If we’re separating the men from the boys here, Jordan’s chest hair is curling out of his flannel shirt. I’ve really got to stop making my metaphors sound so homoerotic.

The scientist and the artist in me both find Nikki Graziano’s FoundFunctions to be really relaxing for some reason. It’s like they can quit fighting for dominance and just enjoy looking at something together. They’re probably holding hands across the two hemispheres of my brain right now. Shit, does that mean I’m gonna start having seizures? Eh, worth it.

Matt Haber

Matt Haber
I have been waiting for 3 or 4 years for Matt Haber to finally have a website (his old one never worked for some reason), and lo and behold this morning I find that he does. Finally, after all this time, I can sit and stare holes into his paintings for hours on end. Haber has been one of my three top favorite artists (Haber, Jeff Soto, and Greg Simkins) since I first saw his work way back when. I’m pretty sure I wrote about him on the Juxtapoz site at least once. Each of his paintings is a different story being told, and I like to sit and imagine what those stories are. Someday, if I ever have money, I’m gonna buy one of his paintings, and then promptly pee myself from excitement. I wish I was joking. Thanks for getting that site up, Matt, it really made my day.

Not only a talented illustrator, but a helluva designer. And, apparently a grillmaster. Triple threat. Put that in your Thursday and smoke it.

These are like the zen rock gardens of paintings.  Maybe it’s the mylar that she paints on, but it’s been a long time since I’ve been so in love with the motion of an artist’s brush strokes. The way she combines flowing, organic forms with more solid shapes, and the subtle use of color and washes, leave me quietly staring and smiling. Aleksandra Rdest, I am smitten with your work. I want to get one of them on my wall, and look at it for days. Seriously, welcome to my top ten.

Philip Bell

Philip Bell
I’m trying to sit here and eat an apple, and Philip Bell is ruining it for me. Each time I take a bite, I spit a little bit of it out because I’m so impressed with his work. It goes: bite, “holy shit!”, little pieces of apple go flying. The work that is specifically causing me to projectile chew is his Illustrated Bill of Rights project. He designed a set of pictograms for each of the ten articles that compose the Bill of Rights and then created radial patterns out of them. It’s like a kaleidoscope made of our basic freedoms! Fun! Side note: when I was a kid I broke open a kaleidoscope, took out all the colored, plastic crap, and replaced it with various living insects that I thought looked cool. This and the food spitting would explain why I don’t have many friends.

Saiman Chow

Looking thru the B-Sides from Golden Lucky on Vimeo.

Big ups to Beautiful/Decay for letting me know that Saiman Chow had updated his site with some new shiz. If it wasn’t for them reporting on his drawing of sweet, sweet, interspecies love, I never would’ve found the above video; a video that my skater’s heart and five year-old’s imagination feel might be the best thing I’ve ever seen. The film, Looking Through the B-Sides, which was created by Saiman and pal Sean Dougherty, is an 8 minute journey through some tripped-out, creative Valhalla as a young skater runs from an overzealous officer of the law. Having fled from the cops on my board more than once, I would really appreciate it if the next time could be anywhere near this fun, instead of just half an hour behind a dumpster in an alley. Scope Saiman’s whole video arsenal for more amazingness.
