Tweed Tom

Tweed Tom

Just look at that monster. The hand and mind that created that has to be one of the most patient and devious duos ever to grace this planet. That kind of intricacy can only come from the mind of a Swiss watchmaker on speed, hellbent on slow, precise world domination. Clearly Tweed Tom is a threat to humanity as a whole. How am I going to combat this menace? I’m not. I’m probably going to end up funding his planetary takeover by buying one of his prints. I for one welcome our new graphic design overlord, long may he reign.

I’ve been in the market for a new tattoo lately. I’m trying to find something medium sized, maybe something that covers most of my forearm, or I might even cross the line into the worst of all male tattoos — the leg tattoo. I was thinking of getting a wolf with eagle wings riding on a raptor that is tearing its way out of an American flag, but that’s really more of a back tattoo. My constant vigilance for tattoo ideas, makes me very receptive to any and all tattoo art, so it’s no surprise then that I got that special tingle when I came across Stasia Burrington’s work. Ink drawn, tattoo covered women? Yes, please. And of course her talents go far beyond that, but that’s the part that won me over. If I hadn’t already fucked up by getting tattoos on a variety of my body parts, I would definitely go for something more all encompassing like in Burrington’s work. You live with your decisions, I guess. Probably the reason I’ve learned patience in deciding on tattoos. Wolf Eagle Raptor is still a winner though, that one is a definite.

I spent all day on Sunday building a bookshelf, an oversized behemoth slapped together out of shitty Douglas Fir to hold all of my books. I like it, don’t get me wrong, it does what it needs to, and it certainly is sturdy, but I wouldn’t say that it possesses any kind of craftsmanship, and it’s certainly not beautiful. But it did give me an appreciation for wood as a medium, and how difficult it is to try and make it do anything you want. Willy Verginer has been all over the internet in the last week or so, but I would be remiss if I didn’t post him up now that I have a deeper understanding of the frustrations of wood. Because just look at what he does with it. Not only does he have the mastery of the medium to create such beautiful sculptures, but then he uses color and placement to add new layers of expression to each piece. Way to go, Willy; way to take what little pride I had in my crappy bookshelf and smash it to pieces by being so much better. But I’ll tell you one thing your sculptures can’t do: hold all of my books. Booyah.

I’m always a fan of artists who take modern subjects and incorporate them into classical styles. That kind of juxtaposition is great for a million hours of interest, and it also says something about the artist. It’s not exactly easy to figure out what makes a certain style tick, to break it down to it’s basic parts, understand how those work, and then put them back together in your own way. It’d be like taking apart a Porsche without anything but the most basic knowledge of cars, and then putting it back together as a Ferrari. But that’s just what Saul Chernik has done. He’s taken that classical drafting style, remade it perfectly, and populated it with an array of incongruous subjects. Most of them creepy.
