Designer Nicole Meyer will be creating brands for the 10,000 lakes of Minnesota, one a day, every day. It’s a daunting task to be sure, but she seems in pretty good spirits about it, and so far all of her designs are fantastic. This is a good thing for those of you out there in the design world, because someone that talented and prolific has focused on something other than stealing all of your clients by just being better. Breathe easy, guys.

Hey, Brad Kunkle, Gustav Klimt called…he says you’re doing a great job. So yes, there are a couple of elements like Klimt’s in Kunkle’s paintings, namely the dynamic female figures and the gold leaf elements, but that’s pretty much it. In fact I had to dad-poke a friend in the chest to really drive home the point. And Kunkle’s paintings are so beautiful, I tend to overlook any similarities. Each piece is sharp and soft at the same time, carefully crafted with gold and silver leaf to create different effects in different light. The contrast between the metals and the washed out palette just kills me. Seriously. Dead. This dad-poke is coming to you from beyond the graaaaaave (spooky ghost voice). OOoooOOOOoooooOOOOoooooo. Bonus points for having the same first name as meeeeEEEEeeeeeEEEEEeee.

Well I thought I had already mentioned Jonathan Levitt here, but looking back through old posts I have proven that idea wrong. Once step closer to absolute truth. Allow me to put things to right by saying that I spent about half an hour today looking at Levitt’s personal photo blog rather than doing all the things I get paid to do. TIME THEFT! Most of what I learned from my time wasting is that Mr. Levitt leads a more entertaining and certainly more photogenic life than I do, or at least is better at seeing things that way. But I think I can get to that level, I’ll just need a better career, a better camera, and better friends. How hard do you think it would be to fake my own death and start over?

There is something about Chinese illustration, embodied here by the work of Dadu Shin, that I can only describe as “quiet”; things are muted, compositions are sparse, and there is just a mood of silent contemplation. Most Chinese illustrators create images that, even when frenetic, have a deep stillness in them. Why? I have no idea. Everything I’ve gathered about living in China is the exact opposite, with constant movement and cacophony. And more spitting. At this point my pragmatism kicks in, and I stop questioning, because the result is what it is. And what it is is fantastic.
