Varshava and Inhabitat added

Look to your left for some exciting new action from the sidebar. Daily darlings Inhabitat and Varshava have been added for your perusal. I haven’t mentioned Varshava before, mostly because I just found it today, but having spent 5 minutes there I know we’re going to get along great. Like two peas in a can of peas.

Tessar Lo

I’ve been feeling the grittier styles lately, probably as a result of all the cutesy, folky stuff that’s so popular right now. I like paintings that seem incomplete, but in a way that makes you think they’re just waiting to spring to life. I know, that’s a little esoteric, but it makes sense once you’ve seen the work of Tessar Lo. There’s a well developed and original style present, but more than that you can tell that there’s a lot of introspection and interplay of meanings in each piece. Like he’s trying to make Rorschach but his paintings come out instead. Someone needs to make this kid a star.

The Yok

Before the final incarnation of today’s streamlined Dangerous House I posted about an Australian illustrator/street artist called The Yok. Since that time The Yok has done lots of new and terribly interesting things in his work and has started making prize-winning appearances on Fecal Face. The Fecal informed me this morning that the ol’ Yokster has updated his site with even newer even more terribly interesting pieces, which I have seen and you should see. Go and see.

Tyler Stout

Tyler Stout created posters that are jagged and smooth simultaneously. Does that make sense? I doesn’t really need to because you can see for yourself what I mean. Menomena seem to really like him and I really like Menomena. Icing on the cake really. I was smitten before I even knew that. Sweetastic illustration, Tyler.

Katy Horan

The big push toward a more folk style of art is one I’m inevitably going to have to deal with. Art is still art and the artist decides how they want it to look. That’s their job. I’m glad that there are artists out there like Katy Horan who make the transition easier for me. Folk and spiritual and fun all at the same time, Katy’s work reminds of when outsider art first poured into the mainstream. I was five, but I was a weird kid so I paid attention. The nostalgia is personal, but the quality of her work is objective.
