Amplive - Rainydayz

Oakland Producer/DJ Amplive has created a remixes album of Radiohead’s In Rainbows. Initially he was contacted by Radiohead’s reps asking him to cease and decist, but he met with them and now everything’s kosher. Good thing, too, because this album is too good to pass up. It’s available as a free download on Amplive’s site.

Portishead - Third

Portishead has finally announced that they’ll be releasing a new album on April 14th. I’ve had to wait ten years for this. Ten Years! Don’t you ever do this to me again Portishead; it’s bad enough waiting for DJ Shadow albums. The band’s newest album is simply titled Third. You can read about it here. I’d like to add a further wagging finger for one U.S. tour date. C’mon Portishead, Coachella only? Harsh.

The Heavy

In the last couple of years there’s been a revival of that good, old fashioned, soul and funk. I was pretty happy with the nu-soul movement a few years ago, especially with D’Angelo and some others, but I’m fucking stoked about the funk/soul revival going on now. Everyone at this point has heard Amy Winehouse, and most of you should be familiar with Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings. There are plenty of others out there getting on the revival bandwagon, and you can now add UK band The Heavy to your growing roster. They are getting into some seriously choice funk/soul that had my feet and ass tapping and shaking respectively. Get a sweet taste of that old gold on their myspace page.

Moby’s Film Music

Moby, that weird musical vampire, has a pretty interesting deal going on his site. If you are a filmmaker working on a non-profit or non-commercial film then he wants to hook you up with free music. As long as you’re not making money from the film you can have it all for free. If you happen to end up turning a profit somewhere down the line then you can get an easy license and all the money generated from that license goes to the humane society. Moby and I have had our differences over the years, but I have always at least been sure that he’s sincere in his desire to do good in the world. If you’re thinking about making a short film for any reason (skate films of your friends, family videos, whatever) then you might want to sign-up and see what he’s got to offer. Couldn’t hurt.

Daily Videos

1) Light Criticism by GRL.

2) SNL Giuliani: Tough on Graffiti. Both via I Love New Work

And the last one is audio rather than video. I posted a while back about The Hood Internet Mixtape Vol. 1. Bobby at Kitsune Noir just found it recently and now he tells us that Volume 2 is out and banging away. My two favorite tracks just out of novelty alone: Cece Peniston and Black Moth Super Rainbow, and Montell Jordan and Arcade Fire.

The LP- CD hybrid

Ok, so it’s kind of gimmicky to make a CD that’s also playable on a turntable. Most people like to keep the two separate because each elicits a different feeling. CD’s are for loud, quality audio, and vinyl is for listening and nostalgia. I love a different one on different days. But still, a CD/LP hybrid is pretty fucking sweet. What I want to know is who will step forward and bridge the gap between CDJ and DJ. Will QBert be the first to scratch one of these tiny dynamos? It won’t be me, because I don’t have an album to put out. I’ll just dream for now.

Gal Shkedi: Starving in the Belly of a Whale

Isreali illustrator and motion graphics designer Gal Shkedi has a ridiculous awesome music video for Tom Waits’ Starving in the Belly of a Whale. The video was a Gal’s graduation project at Shenkar College of Engineering and Design. Go. Watch. Drool.
