Now Showing
COSH Gallery in London and Wear It With Pride have put together a great show titled Now Showing that opened last Thursday. The show features current artists and illustrators displaying their take on classic movie posters. The list of participants is top shelf and so too are their offerings. Thankfully we can all experience the genius at work because there’s now a Flickr gallery of photos from the show and all the prints available to buy. All of them are editions of 25 and will run you about $250. That’s not cheap, but for the quality of the print and the work it’s small price to pay. I’m drooling pretty hard over the Pietari Posti Metropolis poster (pictured above). And that piece is pretty representative of all the work in the show. Check them out and part with your sweet HEMs (Hard Earned Money).

Punchgut

Punchgut
I’ve heard of Punchgut. I’ve seen plenty of his work. Why then have I not shared the genius with you? I don’t know. Why are you always asking me questions? How does that feel? I didn’t know that he was so close to The Drive-By Truckers, so that brings us a little closer since I was an Athens resident for so long. I’m not sayin’ I’m packing up to move to North Dakota to start a group shower with the guy, but we’ve got some shit in common. Another thing we have going for us is that I really like his crazy ass work as well as his not crazy ass work, and he really likes making it. Anything beyond that really doesn’t matter. Find out all you need to know about the art of rock on his site.

Dan McCarthy

Dan McCarthy
You would think that with my constantly looking for new prints that someone would’ve mentioned Dan McCarthy to me. You would be wrong. Maybe it’s my fault, maybe I wasn’t looking hard enough. McCarthy has some killer line work and and plays with color and shadow like it was his own personal jungle gym. In a lot of ways it reminds me of the work of Jason Munn from Small Stakes. Maybe Jason Munn crossed with Chris Ware. But Ware is my reference for anything line related, so it’s probably a given that I would think of him. You don’t care, you just want to see pretty pictures. Ok. Give the people what they want.

Speartalks: The Little Friends of Printmaking

You all should know by now that I try to bring as much original content as possible. I figure you’re all adults and you can find what you need out there as easily as I can. I just like to talk about beautiful things here. I’m not saying this as an apology for what I’m about to do, but more as an explanation, because right now I’m going to tell you to go to another website for content. Oh yes. The crew at Josh Spear have posted a great interview with Milwaukee powerhouse duo The Little Friends of Printmaking, and you should all go read it. But then come back here. Promise me. I just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to point you in the direction of anything related to Little Friends since they’re my printmaking idols. If polygamy were legal I would try to marry into their little duprass. Instead I just buy everything of theirs I can get my hands on.

Byroglyphics Prints

Byroglyphics
Russ Mills, the genius behind Byroglyphics, has an assload of new prints for sale in his online store. You know I don’t usually shill for anyone, but amazing work like this for so cheap is too much for me to keep to myself. Visit his site to see all the new work he’s been pumping out, then visit his store to buy a print before they’re all gone. Make it the one thing you do this year that you won’t regret.

Bloom Press Sale

Bloom Press
Just when I manage to put a little scratch in the vault, along comes Nat from Bloom Press with a print sale. Not being able to afford original works, the print has been my savior and sin for the past couple years. Get out the rosary, Father, because I’m gonna sin again in a big way come Friday. On April 5th, again that’s this Friday, Bloom Press will be having a print sale at the 2310 Telegraph Ave. HQ in Oakland from 5pm-10pm. Not only that, but Jason from The Small Stakes will be there selling his goods. Makes my wallet shiver just thinking about it. I’m gonna lay a hurtin’ on that checking account. I’m gonna go sell as much blood and semen as possible to leave enough money for lunch on Saturday. I seriously almost just made a joke about blood and semen for lunch. You guys are so lucky I censor myself. You really have no idea how lucky.

Jordan Crane Prints

Jordan Crane Prints
I wonder sometimes if it’s even necessary to mention something after I read about it on Boing Boing. Everyone and their mother reads that site, so why bother? I don’t know why, but I do it anyway. The BB dudes mentioned a new Jordan Crane print available over at Reddingk. I was pretty sure that I’d mentioned Jordan Crane in the past, because dude is a seriously talented illustrator, but I couldn’t track that down. Chalk it up to deja vu. The new print is titled Little Pink Pearl, featuring everyone’s favorite tiny, rubber eraser. It’s a 3 color, hand-pulled print, measuring in at a whopping 26″ by 40″. $80 isn’t bad at all for that size and quality, but it’s an edition of 53 so you might want to bust out your skrilla immediately. Make it rain dolla bills over that way, or you’ll need a much larger eraser to get rid of the shame from missing out. While you’re over there check out all the other Crane prints, t-shirts, and whatnot also up for grabs. Think about the children.

Angie Lewin

I came across the prints of Angie Lewin today, and liked the similarities they have with the work of Charley Harper (the greatest illustrator of all time). Her work uses some great color combinations, and has a vintage 70’s-ish look to it that adds kitsch value to an already wonderful piece. The prints are a little out of my price range, but if you’ve got money to burn you might consider picking one up.
